(or ANY food, that I could tell)

To me, this seemed clearly more neurotic than reasonable. Here is a quote from one article about this fad::

... health specialists say that people’s drive to purge their bodies of toxins can, in fact, be harmful.

Catherine Collins, chief dietician at St George’s Hospital in southwest London, said she saw dozens of patients suffering side-effects ranging from bowel problems to potassium depletion. "There is a fixation with the notion that we can detoxify the body through what we eat and drink, but the whole idea has no scientific basis," said Dr Collins.

Doctors warn of the dangers of detox diets

If you are thinking of trying this "detoxing" craze, be sure to not miss this line: the whole idea has no scientific basis.

If it acts like medicine, if smells like medicine and especially if it CLAIMS to be medicine then regulate it like medicine!

Ayurveda is as nutty as any of the alternative treatments except that the practitioners I've met call themselves doctors and claim -- with a straight face -- that Ayurveda is real medicine based on principles of nature (aka science).

Here is quote from an Ayurveda page:

3. This leads to the sale of all kinds of goofy stuff from colonics to endless variations on fiber and "detoxification" remedies.

Humboldt University in Berlin did a study that injects some common sense to these claims by the "alternative medicine" gang.

Muller-Lissner and his colleagues address some of the notions about constipation in a report published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology.

They first debunk the myth that chronic constipation may lead to autointoxication from the absorption of poisonous substances backed up in the colon.

This belief was held even among the ancient Egyptians, according to an inscription dating back to the 16th century B.C., and in the early 20th century a famous London surgeon asserted that all chronic diseases result from autointoxication. Yet, there is no current evidence to support such a theory, write Muller-Lissner and his team, adding that some people continue to undergo regular "colon cleansing" with laxatives and enemas.

New Report Clears Up Myths About Constipation

also see

Gastrointestinal Quackery: Colonics, Laxatives, and More

Vitamins = poison

Vitamins = poison

No.. of course not. The British food regulator or the funky guy at the health food store who will gladly sell you big bottles and assures you they are safe?

By the way, when you read the article, don't miss this little zinger right at the end:

An obstetrician and gynaecologist, Alastair MacLennan, of the Women's and Children's Hospital in Adelaide, said doctors frequently encountered the consequences of unwise vitamin use.

"I'm aware of oral contraceptive pill failures from women taking vitamin C, which interferes with oestrogen metabolism," Professor MacLennan said.

When is Congress going to stand up to the vitamin industry lobbyists and regulate these pills?

Aquamarine at $575 is worth it, if it works

I decided to poke around and see how much an Aquamarine would set me back. For instance, I've always suspected that acupuncture was a bunch of nonsense. I mean, how the heck does it work?

But, here's a scientific double blind study on acupuncture and arthritis in the knee.

Newsweek article

This study indicates that it works! (in the knee, at least, for a while)

Great! I'll now be less skeptical about acupuncture. I think it should be further studied and, when proven, be adopted by medical doctors.

I still seriously doubt that acupuncture is the "heal all" often claimed and I REALLY doubt those charts linking a spot on the big toe to your spleen (or whatever).

My main point is that there is proven medicine and unproven treatments. The magnet market may be approaching $150 million annually (Collie).

http://skepdic.com/magnetic.html

Dare I also "suggest" that some greedy people are ripping off some dumb people?

The Gospel of Antioxidants

The value of antioxidants -- few things could be less disputed in the world of vitamin therapy. It's proven, right?

All Things considered ran a story on August 2 which is very revealing:
Heart Warning on Misuse of Antioxidants

The American Heart Association issues an advisory that taking antioxidant supplements has no preventive effect on heart disease and may be harmful in some cases. The association advises that people instead get the antioxidants they need from whole foods. NPR's Patricia Neighmond reports.
http://www.npr.org/features/feature.php?wfId=3810779

So, we really should just eat whole foods! Who could have known?

Here's my free "natural" advice: Stop eating junk food. Start cooking for yourself -- especially lots of vegetables and foods with fiber.

Now, with the hundreds of dollars you save by NOT GOING to a naturopath, buy yourself a good pair of shoes and start walking every day.

Stop smoking, drink moderately, limit TV, reduce stress, get some fresh air, wash your hands, brush and floss.

But you knew this, didn't you?
--------
For more common-sense and free advice on antioxidants, check out this link:

http://www.americanheart.org/presenter.jhtml?identifier=4452

Reflexology: 4,300 years old but more time needed

In the recent edition of "Reflexology Across America" newsletter President Laura Aho Jodry explains that skeptics of Reflexology need more time because they are going through the "stages of acceptance."

Stage one is "Skeptics proclaim the idea is impossible because it violates the Laws of Science." (I have to confess that this is the stage I'm stuck on.)

OK, so how much time has Reflexology had to win us skeptics over? She got a selection of Chinese herbal products, at least five of which were later found to contain aristolochic acid. By mid-1994, she had symptoms of kidney failure, and in 1996 she underwent a kidney transplant. She must take anti-rejection drugs for life. The herbs’ distributor said his Chinese suppliers had substituted Aristolochia for another herb without his knowledge.

The distributor -- by its own confession -- was selling products but didn't know what they contained! I thought everything natural was safe! Here is an excerpt from the CDC web site:

The totality of the available data showed little evidence of ephedra's effectiveness except for short-term weight loss, while confirming that the substance raises blood pressure and otherwise stresses the circulatory system. These reactions have been conclusively linked to significant adverse health outcomes, including heart ailments and strokes.

Ephedra, also called Ma Huang, is a naturally occurring substance derived from botanicals.

I wonder how many millions for poor suckers were duped by salespeople at health food stores with the bogus "natural is healthy" line?

Now, those poor dupes are fat AND have stressed hearts with an increased risk for stroke!

Consumer Alert:
FDA Plans Regulation Prohibiting Sale of Ephedra-Containing Dietary Supplements and Advises Consumers to Stop Using These Products

Read about one victim of the "natural" supplement industry:

Stroke Victim Who'd Taken Ephedrine Awarded Millions

Here is a quote:

The jury found the behavior of the company [E'Ola International] "outrageous" and said the product was labeled "all natural" -- even though it contained synthetic ephedrine in addition to herbal ephedra.
